Getting a new tattoo is exciting, but proper aftercare is crucial to ensure it heals well and looks great for years to come. As soon as your session ends, your artist will likely apply a bandage or wrap to protect the fresh ink from bacteria. Follow their specific instructions, but in general, you’ll want to keep the area covered for a few hours, then gently wash it with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap. Pat it dry with a clean towel—never rub—and apply a thin layer of recommended ointment or fragrance-free moisturizer. Avoid submerging the tattoo in water (like baths or swimming pools) for at least two weeks.
As your tattoo heals, it may scab, peel, or itch—this is completely normal. Resist the urge to scratch or pick at it, as that can cause fading, scarring, or infection. Keep the area moisturized, avoid tight clothing over the tattoo, and most importantly, keep it out of direct sunlight. UV exposure can damage a fresh tattoo and cause colors to fade prematurely. Healing usually takes 2–4 weeks, but even after it's fully healed, applying sunscreen to your tattoo whenever it's exposed to the sun will help preserve its detail and vibrancy. Taking care of your tattoo is just as important as choosing the right artist—both are investments in body art that lasts.
